Kutless

Kutless chose their name because of a specific Bible verse. Romans 6:23 says, "For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord" (NRSV). Because of this, the band says, "He took our cuts for us... leaving us 'Kutless'."
In late 2001, founding members Jon-Micah Sumrall (’01), Ryan Shrout (’01), and James Mead, along with former band members Kyle Mitchell (’01) and Nathan "Stu" Stuart (’01), were a fledgling Warner Pacific jam band. Just over a year later, they had become the top-selling new Christian rock group of 2002.
Kutless started out as a campus worship band at Warner Pacific during the 1999-2000 school year. Originally called Call Box, the group debuted some original songs at a college preview weekend for visiting high school students in the spring of 2000. They were rough, but well received. "We were terrible, but in the whole scheme of bands just starting out, we did all right," Shrout said.
It was late 2001, Tooth & Nail signed the band. Kutless enters studio with Aaron sprinkle to record selftitled first album.February 2002

To Know That You’re Alive is the result. It represents the hardest music we’ve ever recorded (songs “The Feeling,” “The Disease & The Cure”), the most experimental (“Dying To Become,” “Sleeping City”) and the most melodic (“Guiding Me Home,” “I Do Not Belong”). This album is about feeling fully alive.
